Every year, Federation Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on our history as an organization and to celebrate GFWC’s accomplishments. From initiating a letter-writing campaign that led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, to establishing 75% of America’s public libraries, GFWC members have advocated for positive changes in their communities for the last 126 years. GFWC Legislative History
Since its inception in 1890, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) has been a beacon of community-driven activism, uniting its members to address national and global concerns. Over the decades, dedicated groups of GFWC members, acting as grassroots activists, have left an indelible mark on society.
Central to our organization’s history is the process of introducing and supporting legislation through resolutions. Through this method, GFWC has effectively championed various causes, shaping legislative agendas and impacting policy decisions. As GFWC continues its successful trajectory of grassroots advocacy, we proudly highlight legislative actions aimed at prompting Congress to address crucial issues such as domestic violence, women’s suffrage, veterans’ rights, and vaccination initiatives, among others. Clubs and clubwomen are the local advocates for GFWC’s legislative agenda. It is through the national network of grassroots advocates that the Federation gains its political influence. To participate in the impactful advocacy of GFWC, sign up for the Legislative Action Center, a powerful tool to alert you to GFWC’s public issues and advocacy efforts. Track bills, contact your local representative and take action on issues germane to GFWC Resolutions. For additional information, click here.
